Yuki Tsumugi is a traditional, high-quality Japanese silk fabric produced primarily in Yuki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture. With a history dating back to the Nara period, it is characterized by its lightness, warmth, and unique texture, achieved through hand-spun yarn from raw silk and hand-weaving, especially on a traditional loom. The intricate ikat patterns are also a major attraction. It is extremely durable and long-lasting, becoming more comfortable with each wear. It is registered as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The tortoise shell pattern is a design that uses the ikat weaving technique to depict hexagons resembling a tortoise's shell. Just as cranes are said to live for a thousand years and tortoises for ten thousand, tortoises have long been used as a symbol of longevity and an auspicious pattern. The hexagons in the tortoise shell pattern represent the vertebral scutes, the central part of the tortoise's shell.

One of the defining characteristics of Yuki Tsumugi silk fabric is its intricate tortoise shell pattern. The number of tortoise shells arranged within the width of the fabric determines the type of pattern, such as "100 tortoise shells" or "160 tortoise shells," and the impression changes depending on the fineness of the pattern. The more tortoise shells there are, the finer the threads become, resulting in a more refined pattern.

The threads used in Yuki Tsumugi silk are hand-spun from raw silk, and the uneven thickness of these threads creates the rich texture unique to Yuki Tsumugi. To create the ikat patterns, a very time-consuming process called "ikat tying" is required, in which the parts of the thread that are not to be dyed are individually tied with cotton thread according to the design before the threads are dyed. Then, these threads are carefully woven using a traditional method called "jibata-ori," in which the weaver adjusts the tension of the threads with their waist, resulting in Yuki Tsumugi, which is light, warm, durable, and wrinkle-resistant, and is said to "develop character after being worn for three generations."
